Car AC not cooling? 7 common causes and what it costs in Sharjah

By the Ace Auto Maintenance team · Fixing cars in Sharjah since 1998 · Updated November 2026

In a Sharjah summer a weak car AC is more than uncomfortable. Most cooling problems come from a short list of causes, and finding the right one first saves you from paying for gas refills that leak out again a week later.

1. Low refrigerant from a leak

An AC system is sealed, so if the gas is low, it has leaked somewhere: an O-ring, a hose, the condenser or the evaporator. Signs: cooling slowly gets weaker over weeks. A refill without a leak test is a short-term fix. We add UV dye or pressure-test the system to find the leak before refilling.

2. Blocked or damaged condenser

The condenser sits in front of the radiator and gets hit by sand, dust and stones. When its fins are clogged, the system cannot release heat and cools poorly, especially in traffic. Sometimes a careful clean is enough; a cracked condenser needs replacing.

3. Cooling fan not working

If the AC is cold while driving but warm when you stop at a signal, check the radiator or condenser fan. A failed fan, relay or fuse is a common and usually affordable repair.

4. Clogged cabin filter

A dusty cabin filter cuts airflow, so the air feels weak even when it is cold at the vents. In UAE dust it can clog much faster than the service booklet suggests. It is one of the cheapest fixes, and it also improves the smell inside the car.

5. Compressor or clutch problems

The compressor pumps the gas around the system. Signs of trouble: a grinding or squealing noise when the AC is on, the clutch not engaging, or no cooling at all. A compressor is a bigger repair, so we confirm the diagnosis and the price with you before ordering parts.

6. Electrical faults

Pressure switches, relays, sensors and wiring can stop the compressor from switching on even when everything else is fine. Computer diagnosis helps find these quickly.

7. Blend door or actuator

If one side of the car blows cold and the other warm, or the temperature control does nothing, a blend door actuator behind the dashboard may have failed.

Quick checks you can do today:
  • Is the air cold but weak? Think cabin filter or blower.
  • Cold while driving, warm at idle? Think cooling fan.
  • Getting weaker over weeks? Think leak.
  • Noise when you switch the AC on? Stop using it and get the compressor checked.

Questions

How often should I service my car AC in the UAE?

Once a year, ideally before the summer starts. Heat and dust make AC systems work much harder here than in milder climates.

Is it safe to just refill the AC gas?

Only after a leak test. If there is a leak, the new gas escapes again and you pay twice. We test first, then refill.

How long does an AC check take?

An AC check and refill usually takes a few hours. Bigger repairs depend on parts, and we give you a time on WhatsApp with the price.
